NERVOUS SURGEONS

UK HOT RODDERS & DRAG RACERS

"Nervous Nick's" 48 Austin Nogbad the Bad

"Nogbad the Bad" owned and run by Nervous Nick aka Nick Brooke-Langham.

Powered by a 289 Ford small block backed up by a C4 box, originally built by Mike Taylor in the early 80's. Mike sold the car to a local Rodder who then parked it in a Bristol lock up for over 15 years until Nicks intervention. The car runs on Centerline Wheels on all four corners and has a chromed 4" drop tube front end. Stopping power is provided by discs all round and was out and about during the 04 season and should be out again during 05 but with several changes watch this space for a Gasser

Where does the name come from is the usual Question, well those of you old enough

Yep you guessed it 'Nogbad the Bad'

"Slingshots" MK1

At the recent Classic Ford Day @ the Pod Slingshots Mk 1 was used as the before, with the Ray White's Zody being the after, not much difference then!!!!!!

Chris Allen aka "Slingshot" owns and drives an X Harris MK1 Zephyr Zodiac which is now motivated by a Crate 302 motor from Real Steel. Chris has taken a very clean car and made it so much better, unfortunately for Chris the old engine disintegrated after only a few miles following the cars purchase, hence the crate motor. This was a major set back but one which he overcame, only for the 9" Ford back end to start giving problems, this was sorted by the car making the trip to Geoff Hauser's workshop where it received a complete rebuild. Slowly Chris was working his way through the car replacing many items. Next on his list were the wheels replacing the Drag Stars with American Racing mags 6 in all! 6 because one of the sets he ordered from the states were ordered with the wrong offset, whoops! With the wheels finally sorted Chris set too with his forte, he is an expert polisher and has an good eye for the finer details which help finish off a car. Next on the list is a C4 rebuild and a retrim of the leather seats.

No the photographer has not fallen over, its one of those arty shots, which incidentally was taken at the Outlaws Hot Rod Picnic.

"Just Jim's" Steel 32

Midway between primer and final paint

Jimmy Rutter is finally turning his dream into reality with him nearing completion of his Steel 32 Roadster, Jim is a traditionalist and his flathead motored Hot rod is being built with all the right parts, which includes a Super Bell drilled I beam front end complete with 40 Ford drums, plus many other parts which have taken years to amass some would say he is taking just as long to piece them all together! This however fits neatly with the ethos of the Nervous Surgeons as as long as you are having fun with a car it does not matter if it is on the road or in the garage. Jim's car will be resplendent in pale blue when it hits the road and he assures us there wo'nt be a piece of billet anywhere!!

It may have been a while in coming, but you know how the saying goes, "All good things come to he who waits" well that waiting has finally paid off for Jim. With his steel 32, now painted, wired, MOT'd and running, its back in his garage, it has'nt made it out to any shows this year, but 2007 will be a different story.

Both front and rear plates have benefitted from Jim's swap meet and more recently ebay finds, with original California license plate tags.

Below Just Jim's Roadster finally breaks cover and heads for Billing, this is it on the show

field on Saturday, Jim was celebrating the arrival of hopefully another generation

of Rodders with his grandson being born a few days earlier, how you doin Pop?

She lives and breaths !!

"Paranoid Paul's" Pop

Paul has been into the rodding scene for over 15 years and never actually taken the plunge to own one, however this was all about to change when he decided to fullfil his ambition to own a Ford Pop. He knew exactly what he wanted, it had to have a V8, chromed Jag IRS and be able to seat 4. So he brought a V6 Powered , non Jag IRS 2 seater Pop, welcome to the Nervous Surgeons Paul,I can tell you will fit in nicely!

Billing 2007 Look no flooding!!!

Paul's pop like every other one did not always look this good, it took the skills and genius of the Father and son team of Merv & Nick Barnett, to make this particular piece of British tin, the eye feast it is today.

Luckily we have obtained some build up pictures, so we hope you enjoy them.

In bare metal, part way through prep for paint.

A view of the inside, you can see just how well the cage hugs the internal contours and how straight forward but well executed the internal steel work is.

TUBBED, PRIMERED, CAGED and DOORLESS

Dave's Motor

Dave Woodfield has been around the Custom Car - Hot Rod scene for more years than he cares to remember, but those who know him would tell you if he cut himself, the blood would be blue, as he is a true Ford man. Dave started out with a Consul and has between then and now built, restored, modified and run over 40 MK1 and MK2 Consul and Zodiac Fords.  Dave is also an original member of the "South Beds Cruisers" but unlike some of the Nervous Surgeons his motoring closet contains a lot of quality cars.

His current ride the MK2 Zodiac below is motivated by a 302 backed up by a C4 box driving through a narrowed 8" Ford. The car has a wonderful paterna to it and like Nervous Nick is finished in what they would both term "Road rash".

Winter cruising at its best

The car runs (unusually for a 50's Ford) Rodlite wheels all round. The rears are regularly subjected to some serious abuse, as Dave does like to make use of any road surface to light them up.  He is even more proficient at this past time, now he has added a Line Lock to the car.

Informed Ford officianados amongst you will realise the significance of the registration that the Zody wears, 206 E is the factory designation assigned to the MK2 Zodiac line, an extremely significant but rare plate.

The shot above sums up Dave and his cars so well.

Flat Tops pop

Flat Top Mikey has his Pop well underway, with the base work of Wisbech Engineering gradually being added to and the Pop evolving into a highly detailed Rod.

There are a lot more images of Falt Tops pop on the Garage Scene pages so check them out.

Here the engine is part way through its build process, sporting its all stainless steel headers.

Here the engine has been dropped into place, I wonder if the engine colour gives us a clue as to the cars final colour scheme?

NOW THINGS ARE GETTING SERIOUS AND STAINLESS

FRONT LOOKS LIKE IT JUST NEEDS PLUMBING!!

THEY NEVER LOOKED THIS GOOD IN THE 70's

JUST A LITTLE WIRING REQUIRED

MT Willys

MT - Mike Taylor's Gasser Wars Refugee, the original car being a survivor from that particular conflict without a single shot being fired as it was fought out on the Drag Strips of America.

This Willys was painted metallic green, sported some psychodelic paint lace work, and was originally campaigned by a couple of brothers. The Willys was parked sometime during the 70's and eventually made the Transatlantic crossing courtesy of Duncan Purcell, before finally landing in the very grateful hands of MT.

He was so grateful to finally own the Willys he did what any self respecting Rodder does, and promptly pulled the car apart, and so beagn an epic rebuild, the results of which can be seen below.

Phase 5 above the car is up running and looking every inch a winner!

Phase 7 the HOT in Hot Rod or Gas in Gasser

Blown Bruiser and ET 10 spokes - evolution of the species

Lil Bob's Pop

Lil Bob has been into Hot Rods for more years then he cares to remember, his latest ride is a bit unusual, not only is it the brightest yellow in the club, but it is a fibreglass Pop body. Now you don't see many of those about, and you will have to be quick to catch a glimpse of Bob's as the combination of the light body and Rover motor means it doesn't hang around!

Running the same rims as Paranoid Paul's Pop and a similar stance, I forsee a grudge match on the Horizon!

Lil Bob like most of us have owned a variety of cars before this one with Pops and a Willys finding their way into his garage. Check back soon for more details on these.

Baby Hemi Hauler

Nick Barnetts All Steel 32 Ford Pickup

This gloss 'black beauty' once again features the ingenutiy of the Father & son team of Nick & Merv Barnett, with so many traditional features blended so skillfully with engineering touches, from the baby Hemi - Daimler 2.5 V8 (liberated from the clutches of MT ) to Volvo Amazon gearbox occupying the space between engine and propshaft.

Now who would think of utilising this particualr box, only someone with the 'Dare to Different' attitude to Rodding and when it comes to this it must be the sea air as it is rife in this area of England.
